Through Bible study, mission projects, visitation and fundraising, First Lutheran Women (FLW) are “sharing God’s grace.” The purpose statement of the Women of the ELCA is:
As a community of women
created in the image of God,
called to discipleship in Jesus Christ, and
empowered by the Holy Spirit,
we commit ourselves to
grow in faith,
affirm our gifts,
support one another in our callings,
engage in ministry and action, and
promote healing and wholeness
in the church,
the society, and
the world.
The FLW meet the second Monday of the month at 12:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall. (This is open to all women of First Lutheran.) Each month hostesses provide the meal. Devotions are given, followed by a business meeting.
Global: Our mission project for 2010 – 2011 is Health kits. Items for the kits are gathered and then assembled for shipment to Lutheran World Relief.
Community: For one month of the year, FLW serves coffee at the Good Samaritan Care Center in International Falls. Prayer Shawl Ministry knitting group meets each month at the church on the first and third Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. Shawls are knit, crocheted, or made some other way. The shawl is then dedicated and given to a recipient.
We have two circles for Bible study:
• Sarah Circle – meets the third Monday of the month at 2:00 p.m. at the church.
• Naomi Circle – meets the fourth Monday of the month at 5:00 p.m. in Memorial Hall.
FLW maintains the kitchen supplies, sponsors youth camperships, and purchases items for the church as needed. Our fundraising events are the Christmas in July Bazaar & Luncheon, and the Tour of Trees, held in December.
Funerals: FLW provides food and serves for funerals held at First Lutheran. The funeral committee contacts the calling groups who then call members for food and helping hands.
Quilting: During the months of January, February, March, and up to Holy Week, a group quilts in Fellowship Hall, Thursdays and Fridays, from 9:00 a.m. until 3:00 p.m. All are invited to come and help – no experience needed! The quilts are made for Lutheran World Relief. Each quilt is a one-of-a-kind, with a beauty all its own; made as a gift of home by caring people. First Lutheran quilters are both men and women and join about 2000 other Lutheran congregations across the United States who make quilts for LWR. Contact person: Joyce Grover (218) 283-0854.
